Five Keys to a Great Showroom

5 Keys To Great ShowroomABSi invited to speak at Glass Build America by Window & Door magazine.

For window and door dealers, the showroom—its location, layout, design and usefulness—is key to every sale. And, central to any great showroom is its appeal to the customer. During the Window & Door Dealer Days Keynote Panel Discussion, Oct. 19-20, held during GlassBuild America 2016, four Window & Door Dealer of the Year award winners shared their best practices for creating a showroom that makes the sale.

This article offers five key takeaways from the discussion on how to create a dream showroom. (Editor’s Note: Thanks to Cori Brown, Franklin Window & Door; Rick Locke, Windows, Doors & More; Scott Thurber, Associated Building Supply Inc.; and Jeff Wilcox, Glass Concepts, for serving as the panelists. Thanks to all Window & Door Dealer Days attendees for participating in the discussion.

Associated Building Supply does not include any vendor logos throughout its showrooms; instead, the only visible logo is the company’s own. This way, salespeople can guide the customer to the product that fits their needs, rather than the client automatically gravitating toward a recognized brand name. Read full article.

ABSi and AG Millworks Team up in Silicon Valley!

May20161When this family was in the process of designing their spacious new home, they wanted the best of both worlds for their doors and windows—sleek and modern function with warm, traditional details. Builder Gary Ernst of Ernst Development and Designer Steve Simpson of SDG Architecture teamed up with ABS Los Gatos Door and Window expert Loren Monge to help them make their dreams a reality. AG Millworks custom aluminum clad bi-fold patio doors and custom aluminum clad pocketing lift and slide doors were the perfect solution for their New England-inspired traditional home.

Bi-fold doors and windows fold open entire rooms to the outdoors in the playful pool/guesthouse living quarters and kitchen. In the great room of the main house, pocketing lift and slide doors disappear into the walls to create living space that flows out seamlessly onto the patio and pool areas. Two walls of the formal dining room fold away with AG Millworks bi-fold patio doors, transforming a cozy winter dining experience into an open air patio in just moments.

A new take on an old favorite—the pass-through kitchen window is achieved with bi-fold patio windows so every opening is accessible when the family entertains. Throughout the rest of the house, high end production windows and doors from Clad Outswing Bi-Fold Windows, Clad Bi-fold Doors, Clad Lift & Slide Doors, and Clad Lift & Slide Pocket Doors. All products were finished with a white clad exterior, primed interior, no screens, with satin nickel hardware and SB 60 Glass.

Team up with the experts at Associated Building Supply for your next project and make amazing things happen!

PRESS- DWM Magazine 2016. What to do When the Wall Just Won't Do?

In February, Associated Building Supply, Inc., was named one of DWM’s fastest-growing dealers, having seen sales revenue grow more than 40 percent each year for the past three years and that’s because ABSi knows big sliding doors! In 2014, ABSi was Western Window Systems largest volume specialty dealer in the US., Euroline Steel Windows & Doors’ top volume dealer in the US., and Jeld-WEN’s largest volume specialty dealer in California.

The beauty for the Window & Door Dealer is the ability to blend margins up by inserting specialty sliding doors systems into standard window and door packages. "A veteran sales rep is laser focused on earnings and uses this strategy as a tool to increase commissions and margin bonuses," says Scott Thurber, Vice President of Associated Building Supply, Inc. This high end sliding door product segment has not yet been commoditized in the marketplace primarily due to its installation and application complexities. To sell successfully with no call backs requires a higher sales skill set which includes rough opening layout, post job walks, and structural engineering. When a sales rep can flawlessly perform these value added services builders will happily pay more for the product.

PRESS - LBM Journal 2016. Associated Building Supply Builds on California Luxury

Pictured above are Associated Building Supply Inc.'s President Christopher Cole (left) and Vice President Scott Thurber (right). Photo by Joel Fricker.

In markets like the California coastline regions of San Francisco and San Diego, where new home builds are priced well into the millions, it pays to be an expert in your product category. For Associated Building Supply, Inc., that specialty is windows and doors. And not just any doors and windows. At ABSi, they provide windows and doors to the builders of some of the most expensive homes in the country.

Led by longtime friends Scott Thurber and Chris Cole, Associated Building Supply, Inc. has a story that differs from many building materials dealers still climbing out of the recession. For ABSi, the focus on high-end windows and door products actually kept the business growing through the recession.

The two have known each other since they were both regional sales managers for a window company in the 1980s. Cole opened ABSi’s first location in 1993 in Oxnard, California. Since then, the company has grown to 13 locations, primarily high-end product showrooms specifically displaying unique window and door products. ABSi locations include a main office based at the Oxnard location and a satellite corporate office in Auburn, California. The remaining 11 locations are showrooms/sale offices in Burlingame, Berkeley, Sonoma, Dublin, Los Gatos, Pacific Grove, Oxnard, Calabasas, Costa Mesa, Torrance, and San Diego.

The high-end market has helped ABSi grow to a 2015 total sales revenue of $30.1 million, with a 2016 projection of more than $40 million. The fact of the matter is, while the economy struggled, those with more simply struggled less. “The affluent buyer will have resources even in bad times,” Thurber said. While higher-end products for higher-end homes have always been the company’s focus, Thurber said that product selection has never been mandated as so with the sales staff. “We’ve always been a wood clad seller,” he said, “so our non-commoditized custom offerings have always been a higher percentage of our sales.”

Thurber said ABSi sales staff, guided by the company’s product portfolio, have become specialists in the luxury home market. This has helped distinguish ABSi from its competitors in the market. Click HERE for the full article.

PRESS - DWM Magazine 2016. Housing Revs Up for Big Growth in 2016

Housing’s long, slow road back form the Great Recession has been full of fits and starts, but it appears to be finally hitting the accelerator. Most major forecasts released this fall see strong, steady growth for home construction into 2016 and beyond, bolstered by an improving economy. Though the housing market is currently at 53 percent of normal, by the end of 2016, single-family housing starts are forecast to hit more than 900,000 units, or about 74 percent of normal. That number could rise to more than 1 million units, or 91 percent of normal by 2017 especially as remodeling grew 6.8 percent in 2015 and is expected to grow 6.1 percent in 2016.

Scott Thurber, Vice President of Associated Building Supply Inc. says, “Housing prices continue to escalate on the San Francisco Peninsula and in the Bay Area from San Jose to San Rafael. We’re seeing the same in Southern California. The influx of foreign money, specifically China, into California is also driving demand in the housing market. We haven’t seen the real estate market this strong in the Bay Area and Southern California in years. The midrange segment is flourishing too, and seems to be enjoying the most significant appreciation. We’re watching sleepy beach town shift to destination resort areas, driving real estate prices and demand up. An example of this is Santa Cruz. Two years ago, a 900-square-foot, two-bedroom, one-bath, non-ocean-view home was selling for $550,000. Today, the same home is selling for $780,000. This is a byproduct of Santa Cruz upgrading their downtown, community facilities and attracting more high-end business.” Click HERE to read the full article.

PRESS - DWM Magazine 2016. ABSi Top Window and Door Dealer Nationally

DWM magazine’s top door and window dealers sport some impressive stories behind numbers on both coasts and Associated Building Supply is a perfect example as it has tripled in size in just four years. Though competition was fierce, ABSi persevered allowing them to move from their No. 37 position in 2014 to the No. 23 spot now. The company moved up the list as it added two more locations in the past year and continues its growth. In fact, ABSi’s Vice President Scott Thurber says sales revenue has grown more than 40 percent each year for the last three years. “We have tripled in size in four years,” he says.

That growth will no doubt continue thanks to a new division formed in 2015: The Luxury Production Home Division (LPHD). “This division alone is forecasted to add an additional $5 million in revenue in 2016,” says Thurber. He describes this new venture as one that provides residential homebuilders and developers who build high-end production homes with the finest-quality door and window products in conjunction with unmatched value-added services.

“We are committed to consistently provide an exceptional value proposition that will earn the confidence and ultimately, the trust of our customers,” Thurber concludes.

Next Generation in Sliding Door Technology

2015PAMProject6Pacific Architectural Millwork is a premier millwork manufacturer with extensive experience fabricating and installing custom stile and rail doors, lift-and-slide doors, bi-fold doors, and windows for commercial and residential projects of all sizes and styles. Throughout 2015, Associated Building Supply, Inc., and PAM had partnered up for a few projects lead by ABSi sales consultant Bob Parliament as well Rich Mathieu. The projects feature, fixed windows, bi-fold, multi-slide as well as lift and slide doors featuring PAM's slide and seal technology.

Fixed Windows are an effective, inexpensive way of allowing natural light into those dull areas of the home, like the ends of hallways or stairwell landings. Added or coupled to your operable windows and doors, fixed windows will noticeably brighten up living areas and increase your vision area. Bi-fold doors also known as folding doors or accordion doors, along with multi-slide, and lift and slide doors, open up by folding inward at the middle or end. They are a usually found indoors and consist of multiple panels. These doors can provide a quick sight and sound division with a simple operation.

Exclusive to PAM, the patent-pending Slide & Seal represents a quantum leap in sliding door technology. The panels glide effortlessly along the track until they reach the closed position, which automatically triggers an independently-operating bottom threshold to drop and seal the doors, thus eliminating the need for bulky handles to operate and lower each panel.

The advantages of the Slide & Seal door system over traditional Lift & Slides are numerous: adjustability in the rollers to facilitate installation and accommodate variations in the opening, reduced cost and cleaner lines due to less visible hardware, flush handles and edge pulls that allow the panels to disappear flush into a pocket, and the ability to automate the door with remote or keypad operation while retaining weather performance.

The pictures displayed below are a prime example of great results provided through a great partnership. For many years, ABSi has teamed up with PAM for unique and stunning projects, both large and small as shown below.

ABSi Partnerships at the 2015 MDC

Over the weekend of Oct 16-18, 2015, Associated Building Supply, Inc., along with two of its premier vendors Pacific Architectural Millwork and Euroline Steel Windows & Doors participated in the 2015 Monterey Design Conference (MDC) located at the Asilomar in Pacific Grove, which is just a mile from ABSi’s Pacific Grove Showroom. For ABSi, it's a pleasure to support the AIA and its members whom we interact with frequently statewide. The booth was located at space #P11 in the Pavilion with brochures and sample products on hand. ABSi’s Vice President, Scott Thurber was elated as he believes, “Anytime ABSi can give back and support the AIA were all for it! The MDC was a great platform to present our name brand and Product Portfolio to high profile Architects statewide.”

Regional Account Manager, Rob Holland, represented Pacific Architectural Millwork at the MDC. “The atmosphere was very casual and very different than other architectural conferences/events that I have attended,” however “As always, I have a solid relationship with ABSi and their associates so that interaction and experience was great,” stated Holland. Representing Euroline Steel Windows & Doors was their National Sales Director, Brace Lake. Describing the atmosphere as, “festive and friendly.” Lake claims, “ABSi is a valued partner and it was a pleasure to meet architects from all regions of California.”

BraceABSi sponsored a one-hour CES course hosted by Holland and Lake. The course explained the design elements and benefits of large indoor/outdoor living spaces using quality manufacturers of fenestration products.  “It was a positive experience," specified Lake as both he and Holland were able to meet with esteemed architects, as well as other distinguished members of the industry.

Entering its fourth decade, the Monterey Design Conference (MDC) brings together the world’s leading architects and design thinkers for an intellectually vibrant weekend. According to Bradshaw, “Having a partnership at MDC with Euroline and PAM further increased our visibility, architectural confidence and gave us a unique opportunity to collaborate on the spot with architects looking for solutions for their projects both present and future.” With over 800 architects in attendance, this was an elite event to be able to engage with the architectural community at a distinct location, and Thurber concluded, “I believe its these type of events that move the ball forward for ABSi and put our name brand on the map as a resource for Architects.”

Associated Building Supply Inc. competes on National stage with ProSales Top 100!

Whos Next Says ProSales?

ProSales Magazine Editor Craig Webb reports; "Given all the mergers and acquisitions that took place before and after Pro Sales announced the 2015 ProSales 100, several places on the list are likely to open up next year. When that happens, these dealers might well fill the gap. These are the top 10 companies that missed the cut for this year's list. Half of them posted growth rates that doubled or even quadrupled the 10.3% average sales growth for PS100 members. If they keep that up, there's no telling how high up the list they'll appear in 2016."

As the chart below indicates ABSi led the TOP 10 companies in growth in 2014 and is poised to have another double digit gain in 2015! "We have already added two new locations this year in Dublin and Pacific Grove to serve long term strategic markets." Read Article  2015 Pro Sales top 10

The chemistry between a Client and Place forms the point of departure for every project. The location of a building within the broader context of the region or culture in which a project is being designed is essential, and often forms the basis for our inspiration. Situating the building in its specific terrain is where the building design begins, in essence, creating the set which will allow the architecture to respond to the particularities of its climate, topography, soil, hydrology, and flora. Associated Building Supply Inc. (ABSi), which sells products from LaCantina Doors, Western Window Systems and Pacific Architectural Millwork, among others, agrees that the geographic versatility of the indoor/outdoor living trend comes down to how the entire multi-panel door system is engineered. “The design is 100 percent different depending on the location. You can put the cheapest door in the exact same space, and it may look good, but it could leak like a sieve,” Thurber says. He stresses the importance of proper installation to this extent, specifically calling out the function of the sill pans and flashing system. Water management is a huge piece of the puzzle. And while it may not be top-of-mind for homeowners, it’s the dealer’s responsibility to make it so.

In a crowded home improvement market, consumers are faced with a plethora of choices when it comes to window and door replacement, as are builders seeking products for new construction projects. And while a number of companies—from big box stores to full-service remodelers—offer window and door products and installation services, they aren’t “specialists” in the field. In an effort to highlight the unique expertise of dealers and distributors that do primarily focus on the window and door market, Window & Door introduces the first national Top Specialists rankings. This new list—the latest in Window & Door’s prestigious “top list” editorial that includes the Top 100 Manufacturers—ranks dealers and distributors specializing in windows, doors, skylights, sunrooms and related products for the new construction, remodeling and replacement markets, based on sales volume. To qualify for these rankings, sales of windows, doors, skylights and related products, accessories and services must account for more than 50 percent of a company’s 2013 estimated total sales. The Top Specialists list is Window & Door’s first effort to identify the largest independently owned, specialty window and door companies in the United States. Click here.

Dealers work to train sales teams, homeowners as new guidelines take effect... by Emily Kay Thompson, Editor Window & Door Magazine

FEATURE ARTICLE | Energy Efficiency For many dealers across the country, getting up to speed on the Energy Star v6.0 specification will be among their New Year’s resolutions. As of January 1, 2015, manufacturers must use the v6.0 product specification when labeling products for the North-Central, South-Central, and/or Southern Climate Zones. Energy StarManufacturers may continue to use the v5.0 product specification for the Northern Zone until January 1, 2016. For dealers, the education of their sales teams—and customers—will be crucial to a successful transition.

Energy Star v6.0 will impact some dealers more than others, according to Scott Thurber, vice president of Associated Building Supply, Inc. “It depends on the business model, the target audience, and what niche you’re after,” he says. “It is probably much more important in the remodel/retrofit market than it is for specialty/high-end that sells product solutions based on aesthetics.”

“Manufacturers give you tools and horse power when it comes time to talk energy,” Thurber says of his suppliers. For example, he says that Jeld-Wen’s architectural consultants put on training seminars and, “from a marketing standpoint, they provide a lot of materials.”

PRESS - Window & Door Magazine 2014. ABSi Awarded National Top Honors - 2014 Dealer of the Year - Leadership in the Professional Market

DOTY 2014 LogoABSi Awarded 2014 Dealer of the Year by Window & Door Magazine.
Associated Building Supply, Inc. recognized Nationally for overall excellence in the professional market October 27, 2014 by Window & Door Magazine. At Associated Building Supply, the sales team spends a lot of time developing relationships and building trust with architects. “We work hard to protect and enhance their reputation with the homeowner by ultimately taking the burden of the window and door decision off their shoulders,” says Vice President Scott Thurber, who joined the company eight years ago when owner Chris Cole decided to expand the business. During his tenure, Thurber has helped grow ABSi to eight showroom locations in California—ranging from San Diego to Northern California—and 20 sales-people.

“ABSi sales experts take ownership with each customer and are committed to the service they provide from start to finish on every project,” says Jason Funk, president of Western Window Systems, which supplies ABSi. “They work to build the customer’s vision and stay on budget.” To enable the sales team to offer top-notch service, ABSi gives its sales consultants access to all eight showrooms for customer meetings and to use work stations when on the road. Since the company uses a cloud-based system, consultants have access to a private, real-time sales dashboard, quoting software, customer contracts and business records. “With a salesforce of tenured industry professionals, LaCantina Doors has the utmost confidence in ABSi’s ability to manage complex projects and support our mutual customers,” says Tim Kelting, national sales director for LaCantina Doors, which Associated Building Supply carries in its showrooms. “ABSi draws from a broad range of experience and has proven its ability to successfully exceed the service expectations of builders, architects and designers, as well as homeowners and end users.” Jeld-Wen Sales Manager Larry Case says he appreciates ABSi’s “continual training” for its employees and their professional customers—contractors and architects—who regularly attend Jeld-Wen manufacturing and plant training and tours. “You can expect an ABSi consultant to know the answer to product questions or know the best path to get an answer quickly,” he says. Thurber says the company helps its customers through value engineering and knowledge. “When some people look at plans, they see it as gospel. We look at it as art—requirements, codes, installation, aesthetics—all the things the homeowner, builder, and architect are after rolled into one package. That’s where we shine. We spend a great deal of time on the "complete package" by providing window & door intellectual property as the consultant of choice, the expert.” The method seems to be working. ABSi has achieved 40-50 percent growth per year over the past three years, according to Thurber. “We did well during the Recession by focusing on the high-end luxury home niche, which didn’t suffer like the production home segment.”
ABSi is committed to finding employees who Thurber says “are leaders, more professional. We continue to grow and hire all the time. We’re trending at $21 million for this year and our goal is to be at $50 million in the next three to four years.”doylogo 2010 ABSi is a 2-time winner of the prestigious Dealer of the Year award.  DOTY 2010

ABSi 2014 Supplies JELD-WEN Contemporary Wood-Clad Product Solutions

Contemporary Design is all about wide open spaces, clean lines and bold geometry. For many, the style also means individuality. ABSi supplies JELD-WEN Contemporary Wood Clad Window & Door products for high end luxury homes in the Bay Area.Fischer-Rice 1 33

That’s the inspiration behind JELD-WEN's contemporary models in their Custom Window & Door line, which offers those with a passion for contemporary and modern architecture the opportunity to create their own unique door and window styles using a combination of intriguing details and natural materials such as glass, metal and wood.

Over the years, contemporary homes have proven themselves to be among the most popular of styles, and JELD-WEN experts foresee a continued growth curve in the years to come.

In fact, the Perfect Home Survey, a nationwide study of homeowners commissioned by JELD-WEN, found that respondents identified contemporary as the second-most desired style of home in which they would like to live.

The window and door product originally specified for these featured projects by the esteemed California based Architect were high-end Architectural Aluminum product. However, as it often does during the Title 24 energy calculation process, preserving the homes desired energy efficiency standards presented significant challenges and in this case as most, would not be compromised.

California Bay Area Swatt Miers Architecture was introduced to JELD-WEN's "Custom" wood clad narrow sight-line window and door product offering. They were amazed to discover, in addition to  enhanced energy efficiency, far more desirable and affordable  design options in terms of warm wood species, interior & exterior finishes, architectural profiles, design pressure performance options, and overall esthetics.  swatt panos24

They discovered "the look" was similar in terms of accomplishing wide-open spaces and narrow site lines yet the energy efficiencies of wood clad windows and doors proved far superior to aluminum. A terrific product solution that satisfied and complimented design and energy requirements while achieving budget.

ABSi, JELD-WEN's largest volume specialty dealer in California, employ 17 factory trained Sales Consultants to consult directly with Architects and Builders on how to effectively utilize JELD-WEN's "Custom" product offering as the perfect contemporary window & door product solution. swatt panos52

ABSi Sales Consultant Bob Parliament Supplies Windows & Doors for Stanford University Olmsted Housing

Olmsted Housing Will Improve Stanford's Recruiting of Coaches.
The construction of 25 housing units, including 17 single-family homes and four duplexes, designed primarily for athletic coaches and their families, is on a three-acre plot between El Camino Real and Olmsted Road. The Stanford Athletics housing project between El Camino Real and Olmsted Road, projected to make recruiting coaches easier, is completetd, according to Deputy Athletic Director Ray Purpur.
Front view Small
Like the nearby and newly opened faculty housing project on Stanford Avenue, the additional housing for coaches is intended to offset the extraordinary cost of living in the Stanford area. Often, newly hired staff members have trouble finding affordable living space near campus. "We're the most expensive housing market in all of Division 1A athletics," said Purpur. Having an on-campus housing option makes Stanford more competitive when recruiting talented coaches, he added. "Now, when we bring in a coach or an assistant coach, we can say, 'here's your salary, here's your team, and your budget and your benefits'," said Purpur. "And by the way, here's a house." Building Street Pic 2 Smallhomes for coaches has been part of Stanford Athletics' master plan for the past 25 years, Purpur said. The project was first proposed in 2007. The trustees gave construction approval to a scaled-back plan in April 2009. The Olmsted Road Staff Rental Housing, which includes 17 single-family homes and four duplexes for Department of Athletics coaches on 3 acres bounded by El Camino Real, Stanford Avenue and Olmsted Road. Each home is two stories and comes with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The houses, which Daycare Center Smallrange from 1,550 to 1,880 square feet, are each equipped with stainless steel appliances, a washer and dryer, and a big-screen television installed above a fireplace. "It's a little outrageous how nice they are," joked Purpur. All the houses are for rent only, which will allow for flexibility, since coaches tend to be transitory. The Athletics Department's long-term goal is for the complex to serve as transitional housing so that short-term coaches can avoid the logistical hassle that comes with moving, and long-term coaches can eventually afford a down payment on a house. Purpur said the project has been supported by Stanford alumnus John Arrillaga, who has been involved as project manager. "He's the driving force behind getting this done," said Purpur.
Whole HOuse Small
Although the buildings have not been completed, all the homes are spoken for. The neighborhood will be mostly populated with a mix of head and assistant coaches, although three of the units will be occupied by staff members from outside athletics. Purpur hopes that the neighborhood will be a fun, close-knit community. All the families moving into the new housing have children, and a large playground will be installed in the complex courtyard. "I think there's going to be huge barbecues outside where people talk about coaching philosophies," said Purpur. He hopes that the neighborhood will facilitate communication between coaches, eventually allowing more experienced coaches to mentor new ones.

Energy efficient LowE366 glass was used with a multitude of Simulated Divided Lite bar profiles and lite breakups. "The Stanford University Olmsted Housing project is a complete showcase of JELD-WEN window & door products and clearly demonstrates JELD-WEN's ability to achieve diverse design challenges with quality product solutions"; says ABSi Vice President Scott Cascade Fixed 3 SmallThurber. In addition, JELD-WEN IWP Aurora pre-finished Fiberglass Entry Systems were used over traditional wood entry products to enhance quality and reduce maintenance. On the interior, Lakeview Milllwork's beautiful interior solid core doors and TruStile MDF were used on the interiors to enhance and compliment the wide array of design needs. To top it off, SmartCare, the ABSi proactive service program was embraced and praised by both Builder & Architect. Architect Jeremiah Tolbert, architect and principle of Tolbert Designs, also feels similarly about working with ABS. “I believe they seek to please their clients by offering [and] suggesting great products, and carry that through to the final installation of it,” he says. “ABS does their job with excellence from start to finish.”
